How a MAP blood pressure calculator works
A MAP blood pressure calculator estimates mean arterial pressure from systolic and diastolic readings. The standard estimate also gives pulse pressure, which is systolic pressure minus diastolic pressure; normal pulse pressure is roughly 40 mmHg, while values over about 60 or under about 25 are clinically noteworthy.
The /3 appears because diastole occupies roughly two thirds of the cardiac cycle at a normal heart rate, so diastolic pressure is weighted double. That approximation degrades at high heart rates, so cuff-derived MAP is an estimate rather than a measurement. A single reading is not enough to diagnose a condition.
A MAP below 60 mmHg is widely used as a threshold at which organ perfusion may be inadequate, and at least 65 mmHg is a target commonly used in critical care. Roughly 70-100 mmHg is the commonly cited normal adult range; these are published reference points, not a verdict about an individual. What is the MAP formula?
MAP = DBP + (SBP - DBP) / 3, which is algebraically the same as MAP = (SBP + 2 × DBP) / 3.
Why is diastolic pressure weighted twice?
At a normal heart rate, diastole occupies roughly two thirds of the cardiac cycle. The formula uses that timing as an approximation, and it becomes less reliable at high heart rates.
What does pulse pressure mean?
